JTI’s Packaging Figures Depend on Material Weight and Reporting Scope
The company's 2025 figures describe packaging composition and recyclability, not the recovery rate of discarded devices.
JTI reports that 92% of its packaging was reusable or recyclable in 2025, with recycled content accounting for 17%. Its waste disclosure treats these as separate measures.
The methodology uses material weights across primary, secondary and tertiary packaging, up to shipping cases. JTI draws on recorded composition and weight data, estimates and supplier information.
A footnote matters for historical comparisons: JTI says the 17% recycled-content result would equal 20% under its 2022 scope. Comparing percentages without that boundary would conceal a methodological difference.
Neither measure establishes how many used electronic devices were recovered. JTI discusses Ploom takeback separately and acknowledges that recyclable materials need suitable local infrastructure.
A device-recovery assessment would need its own reporting period and denominator, plus records of collection and subsequent treatment. Packaging’s potential to be recycled cannot supply those missing quantities.
