An estimated 1.44 million US middle and high school students reported vaping in the previous 30 days; the measure includes occasional use.

Key points

  • The 2025 NYTS covers US middle and high school students, not all young people or adults.
  • Current e-cigarette use was 5.2%; current use of any tobacco product was a separate 7.2% measure.
  • Among current e-cigarette users, 27.5% reported daily use; that percentage does not apply to all students.

About 1.44 million US middle and high school students, or 5.2%, reported current e-cigarette use in the 2025 National Youth Tobacco Survey, according to the FDA’s published results. Current use means using a product on at least one of the previous 30 days, rather than necessarily using it every day.

The figure should be kept separate from overall tobacco use. An estimated 7.2% of students reported current use of at least one tobacco product. The categories overlap, so their individual percentages cannot be added to produce a total.

Frequency also changes the interpretation. Among students who currently used e-cigarettes, 27.5% reported daily use. That is a proportion of the vaping subgroup, not of the entire student population.

The methodology report records 23,630 completed questionnaires from 196 schools. NYTS uses a school-based sample to estimate behaviour among students in grades 6 through 12. It does not represent young people outside that school population, and self-reported survey estimates carry uncertainty.

In its 23 June 2026 announcement, FDA reported declines during 2022–2025 in e-cigarette use and tobacco use overall. That trend does not by itself identify the cause. The survey is evidence about reported use, not a test isolating the effects of a particular law, enforcement action or commercial product.
