How to Check Whether a Vape Is FDA-Authorized

FDA lists 48 authorized e-cigarette products from five companies as of August 28, 2026. Each entry is one exact device or pod at one strength, so retailers have to check SKU by SKU.

Key points

  • FDA lists 48 authorized e-cigarette products from five companies, as of its August 28, 2026 update.
  • R.J. Reynolds Vapor has 16 entries, NJOY 10, JUUL Labs 8, Logic 8 and Glas 6.
  • Authorization covers one exact product and strength, not a whole brand or flavour range.
  • FDA says authorization does not mean a product is safe or "FDA approved".

Only 48 e-cigarette products can be sold lawfully in the United States, according to FDA’s list of authorized products, last updated on August 28, 2026. They come from five companies, and the list names each device, pod and cartridge individually, with flavour and nicotine strength where they apply.

Five companies hold every authorization

Company Entries Product lines on the list
R.J. Reynolds Vapor 16 Vuse Vibe, Vuse Ciro, Vuse Solo, Vuse Alto
NJOY 10 NJOY DAILY, NJOY DAILY EXTRA, NJOY ACE
JUUL Labs 8 JUUL, JUUL2
Logic Technology Development 8 Logic, Logic Vapeleaf, Logic Pro, Logic Power
Glas 6 Glas G2 device and five 50 mg/mL pods

One entry means one exact product

An authorization attaches to a specific device, cartridge or pod at a stated strength. JUUL’s entries, for example, cover Virginia Tobacco and Menthol JUULpods at 3.0% and 5.0%, the JUUL and JUUL2 devices, a JUUL2 Virginia Tobacco pod at 18 mg/mL and a Polar Menthol JUUL2 pod. A flavour or strength that is not named is not covered, even when it carries an authorized brand name.

For a shop or distributor, that makes the check a SKU-level job: match the exact product name, flavour and strength on the shelf or invoice against the list, not the brand on the box.

New authorizations appear the same day

FDA says it posts new authorizations on the list on the day they are granted. A downloadable flyer version is usually updated within one or two business days, and the agency’s Searchable Tobacco Products Database adds newly authorized e-cigarettes the day after authorization. FDA describes that database as its most comprehensive listing of legally sold tobacco products.

Because the list changes without notice, keeping the date of each check alongside the result is a sensible habit for compliance records.

Authorized is not the same as approved

FDA states that authorization “does not mean these products are safe, nor are they ‘FDA approved.'” The agency adds that all tobacco products are harmful and potentially addictive, and that people who do not use tobacco should not start.

State rules are a separate check

Federal authorization is only one layer. A growing number of states run their own product directories or bans with their own listing rules and effective dates, so a product can be on FDA’s list and still face restrictions in a particular state.

The full list, entry by entry, is reproduced on our FDA-authorized vapes tracker, and state directory rules are tracked on our state directory laws page.
